PHILADELPHIA -- Grim faced, hands on his hips, Craig Berube looked like the angriest man in Philadelphia. wholesale nfl jerseys . The coach the Flyers call "Chief" could afford to smile. He won his debut -- and helped the Flyers avoid their first 0-4 start in franchise history. Brayden Schenn and Braydon Coburn scored goals, and Steve Mason had 33 saves to make Berube a winner, leading the Flyers past the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Tuesday night. Berube was on the bench a day after Peter Laviolette was fired after a 0-3 start. Laviolette dealt with rumours of his firing last season, a year in which the Flyers missed the playoffs after the lockout-shortened season. Dont pop the bubbly for win No. 1. "Its over," Berube said. "Were worried about tomorrow and practice." With Berube calling the shots, the Flyers scored their season high for goals. So, theres still work ahead. "We have to get better, we have to have more of an attack," Berube said. "I know we do have good offensive players here. Its just a matter of getting them confident." Mason stopped all 12 shots in the first period and the first 12 of the second until Brad Boyes scored his first of the season with 6 seconds left. Mason, who improved to 5-0 against Florida, came up big when he stopped Shawn Matthias on a short-handed breakaway early in the second. "He just had an answer for all of our shots," Matthias said. "We have to get giddier and work on it." Mason and Ray Emery worked as a tandem in net. Berube gave no indication if he would stick with Mason or use both. "Thats up to Chief to decide who goes in," Mason said. "You guys want to make this huge deal out of it. But Razor and I, our job is just every day, not matter whos in net, is to be the better goalie of the two playing that night. Were not going to dwell on whos starting." Berube arrived steeped in the orange-and-black tradition, with 20 goals and 54 points over parts of seven seasons with the Flyers. He played for four other teams over a 17-year career and his 3,149 penalty minutes are seventh in NHL history. Berube, in his seventh season coaching within the organization, was promoted to replace Laviolette. He is the 18th coach in franchise history. His hard-nosed style quickly rubbed off on the Flyers. "With the career he had, the type of player he was, hes not going to take anything from people," Mason said. "Guys better be working hard." The Flyers offence had a brief jolt of life in the first period against Tim Thomas. Thomas had been sensational in his career in Philadelphia, going 8-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage. He left the game with a pulled groin. He appeared to get tangled with teammate Mike Weaver in front of the net and hit the ice. Thomas bolted straight for the locker room and never returned. Jacob Markstrom took over and stopped all 25 shots. "Its different to come in a game like that, but what can you do," he said. "You just have to get out there and try to help out the team as best as you can." Thomas was pulled after the second period in Saturdays 7-0 loss to St. Louis. He allowed five goals on 28 shots. Thomas allowed two quick goals in the first against the Flyers. Schenn punched in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Thomas was out of position after he appeared to get hurt, allowing Coburn to score his first goal of the season. "Theyre lucky goals, that happens," Berube said. The Flyers scored two goals for the first time this season. With team captain Claude Giroux without a point this season, the Flyers were outscored 9-3. Just one goal in each game. The punchless offence is one reason Laviolette was fired just three seasons after he led them to the Stanley Cup finals. The Flyers know they have to play better. "It was a tough day yesterday," Giroux said. "I was with Lavy for a while, and to see him leave is a little sad. But its the business part of it. We need to understand that." The Flyers got a brief scare in the third when forward Scott Hartnell was slow to get up after defenceman Erik Gudbranson plowed him into the boards. Hartnell needed medical attention on the ice, but skated off on his own power. Gudbranson earned a game misconduct. Notes: There was a brief scrum in the third that saw Flyers F Jay Rosehill get hit with 4 minutes for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct. ... Chicago Blackhawks VP of hockey operations Al MacIsaac presented Emery with his 2013 Stanley Cup champions ring. Emery went 17-1 for the Blackhawks last season. cheap jerseys . -- Jake Paterson made 43 saves to backstop the Saginaw Spirit to their first win of the Ontario Hockey League season on Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over the Erie Otters Cody Payne got the Spirit (1-2-0) off to a fast start with his fifth goal of the young season just 47 seconds into the contest. cheap nfl jerseys . Virtue and Moir, the defending Olympics champions, will take the ice for their short program as part of a busy Saturday that also features the ladies short program and the pairs free skate. http://www.cheapnfljerseyfromchina.us/. The 23-year-old is in his second NFL season, having bounced around the league last year. He played in four games with Detroit, recording seven tackles and defending one pass, but also spent time with Baltimore and New England.SCHLADMING, Austria -- Olympic champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany bounced back from a disappointing World Cup season to win the super-combined at the skiing world championships on Friday. Hoefl-Riesch was fourth after the downhill portion before posting the second-fastest time in the slalom to finish in 2 minutes, 39.92 seconds. She beat Tina Maze of Slovenia by 0.46. Former overall champion Nicole Hosp was fastest in the slalom and came one second behind in third to earn Austria a first medal at its home worlds. "I cant believe it," Hoefl-Riesch said. "The last couple of weeks have not been easy. I had only two podiums this entire season so I wasnt coming here as a favourite. My goal was to win any medal, the colour didnt matter to me. Incredible, it is gold." Hoefl-Riesch appeared to enjoy a clean slalom run, but she said it wasnt. "I am surprised as my slalom didnt feel great," she said after her sixth career medal from major championships. "I was a bit too conservative. I didnt finish my last two slaloms on the World Cup so that made me cautious." Maze had shared the lead after the first run with Austrias Anna Fenninger, who straddled a gate in the slalom. Lara Gut of Switzerland, who had the same downhill time as Hoefl-Riesch, also failed to finish. "A classic mistake," said defending champion Fenninger, who was 1-2 with Maze at the worlds two years ago. "I dont train a lot of slalom so timing was always going to be difficult." After a freezing night with clear skies and temperatures sinking to minus-15 (5 F), the course was harder and icier compared to the downhill training runs. Racers had to deal with a rougher and bumpier surface, making the turning sections of the course even tougher to master. Maze, who holds an almost insurmountable 888-point lead in the overall World Cup standings over Hoefl-Riesch, the 2011 winner, lost speed after an early mistake in her slalom, which was set by her coach Livio Magoni. The Slovenian still earned her second medal of the worlds after taking gold in Tuesdays super-G. "I am not satisfied with my slalom run," Maze said. "I held back and showed too much respect. My downhill was pretty good thouggh. wholesale jerseys. Second place and a silver medal is a super result." Maze won the only World Cup super-combined this season in December and started as a clear favourite for the world title. "I felt a lot of pressure at the start. I tried to stay calm but that wasnt easy," Maze said. "People keep asking me about the possibility of winning five medals at the world championships. That door is still open and I wont close it." Hosp earned her fifth medal in total at world championships, but her first since 2007, the same year she won the overall title. After years of struggling with injuries, the Austrian said she finally felt like her best form was back. "I am glad I finally had a good downhill again, I finally skied like I used to do," Hosp said. "My slalom was excellent, that makes me really happy. I am so happy it worked out great. I had some tough times in recent years. And now I have a medal." Hosp said winning Austrias first silverware at the worlds will take pressure off the team, which failed to medal in either the womens or the mens super-G. "It was really hard for us with no medals after two races," Hosp said. "The whole nation is watching these races." Lindsey Vonn won the World Cup super-combined title for the past three seasons but the American was out for the season after injuring her right knee in a crash at Tuesdays super-G. Teammate Julia Mancuso, runner-up to Hoefl-Riesch in the 2010 Olympic race, finished eighth, 3.33 seconds off the winning time. "That was a little disappointing. I was ready to have a good run," Mancuso said. "I still have that mentality that I want to try and win, so maybe Im pushing it too hard." Mancuso was 19th after the downhill but had the seventh fastest slalom. Sofia Goggia of Italy placed seventh, 2.77 off the lead, to score another surprising result, three days after coming fourth in the super-G. The 20-year-old Goggia has competed in only four World Cup races -- all giant slaloms in which she failed to qualify for a second run. The Italian, however, has won four races, including a super-combined, on the lower-tier Europa Cup circuit. The mens downhill is next on Saturday. cheap jerseys ' ' '
