"With the career he had, the type of player he was, hes not going to take anything from people," Mason said. "Guys better be working hard." The Flyers offence had a brief jolt of life in the first period against Tim Thomas. Thomas had been sensational in his career in Philadelphia, going 8-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage. He left the game with a pulled groin. He appeared to get tangled with teammate Mike Weaver in front of the net and hit the ice. Thomas bolted straight for the locker room and never returned. Jacob Markstrom took over and stopped all 25 shots. "Its different to come in a game like that, but what can you do," he said. "You just have to get out there and try to help out the team as best as you can." Thomas was pulled after the second period in Saturdays 7-0 loss to St. Louis. He allowed five goals on 28 shots. Thomas allowed two quick goals in the first against the Flyers. Schenn punched in a rebound for his second goal of the season. Thomas was out of position after he appeared to get hurt, allowing Coburn to score his first goal of the season. "Theyre lucky goals, that happens," Berube said. The Flyers scored two goals for the first time this season. With team captain Claude Giroux without a point this season, the Flyers were outscored 9-3. Just one goal in each game. The punchless offence is one reason Laviolette was fired just three seasons after he led them to the Stanley Cup finals. The Flyers know they have to play better. "It was a tough day yesterday," Giroux said. "I was with Lavy for a while, and to see him leave is a little sad. But its the business part of it. We need to understand that." "The last couple of weeks have not been easy. I had only two podiums this entire season so I wasnt coming here as a favourite. My goal was to win any medal, the colour didnt matter to me. Incredible, it is gold." Hoefl-Riesch appeared to enjoy a clean slalom run, but she said it wasnt. "I am surprised as my slalom didnt feel great," she said after her sixth career medal from major championships. "I was a bit too conservative. I didnt finish my last two slaloms on the World Cup so that made me cautious." Maze had shared the lead after the first run with Austrias Anna Fenninger, who straddled a gate in the slalom. Lara Gut of Switzerland, who had the same downhill time as Hoefl-Riesch, also failed to finish. "A classic mistake," said defending champion Fenninger, who was 1-2 with Maze at the worlds two years ago. "I dont train a lot of slalom so timing was always going to be difficult." After a freezing night with clear skies and temperatures sinking to minus-15 (5 F), the course was harder and icier compared to the downhill training runs. Racers had to deal with a rougher and bumpier surface, making the turning sections of the course even tougher to master. Maze, who holds an almost insurmountable 888-point lead in the overall World Cup standings over Hoefl-Riesch, the 2011 winner, lost speed after an early mistake in her slalom, which was set by her coach Livio Magoni.
