Following an extra innings defeat to Japan on Thursday night, Canada rebounded with a 6-4 victory over Great Britain thanks to three solid innings from Jocelyn Cater of Delta, B.C. Edmontons Karissa Hovinga followed Cater with a no-hitter in a 7-0 demolition of the Czech Republic in five innings to improve Canadas record to 2-1. Against Great Britain, Cater allowed only a hit and a walk with five strikeouts in three innings of work. Canada took a 2-0 lead in the in the top of the second when Joey Lye and Hannah Schwarz, both from Toronto, scored. The Canadians added two more runs the following inning on a two-out, two run double to right-centre field by Megan Timpf of Port Dover, Ont. Canada increased the lead to 6-0 in the top of the fourth and Schwarz was at it again. She hit an infield single and stole second before scoring on a double by Melanie Matthews of Surrey, B.C. Meagan Baird from Ajax, Ont., later hit a sacrifice fly to centre to score Matthews from third. Great Britain cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Stacie Townsend. They pulled another run back in the sixth to make it 6-4 but that was as close as they would come. Torontos Jenna Caira came on in relief of Cater in the fourth, allowing four runs -- three earned -- on three hits and two walks. She struck out six in four innings. Matthews led Canada at the plate with two hits and three runs batted in, while Hayward and Schwarz each added two. Later in the day, Hovinga allowed only a walk, while striking out two as Canada routed the Czech Republic 7-0 in five innings. Canada opened the scoring in the second inning, when Kelsey Haberl of Burnaby, B.C., touched home plate. Canada then loaded the bases before Saskatoons Jennifer Gilbert cleared them with a double to left field giving Canada a 4-0 lead. Canada added to the lead in the third Jennifer Yee from North Delta, B.C., and Haberl scored to extend the lead to 6-0. Canada scored the seventh run on an error in the bottom of the fifth to win the game on the run-ahead rule. Canada will take on the United States on Saturday.
