OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators were on the verge of a massive comeback, only to fall short in overtime. MLB Jerseys China . After overcoming a three-goal deficit the Senators forced the game to overtime only to watch it slip away as Seth Jones scored the winner 3:49 into the extra period as the Nashville Predators defeated the Senators 4-3 Monday night. Ryan Ellis broke in alone on goaltender Robin Lehner and Jones was there to bang home the loose puck. "It was a tough one to slip away and we almost gave it away," said Jones. "We need all the points we can get right now so it was nice to pull away with two." The win allowed the Predators (27-28-10) to snap a four-game losing streak. The Senators say they take solace in earning the single point, but at the same time know they need to be better if they hope to stay in the playoff race. "The way the game was looking going into the third period it looked pretty bleak for us to get that one point so well take the positive," said Ottawas Marc Methot. "It would have been nice to get two, but were happy with the resiliency we showed at the end." Nick Spaling, Craig Smith and Eric Nystrom also scored for Nashville. Pekka Rinne faced 37 shots. This was Rinnes first victory in four starts since returning from injury. Jared Cowen, Methot and Jason Spezza scored for the Senators (28-25-12). Craig Anderson allowed three goals on 29 shots before leaving the game early in the third. Lehner faced 13 shots in relief. Senators coach Paul MacLean said he didnt have an immediate update on Anderson, but didnt believe it was anything serious. Holding a 3-0 lead the Predators nearly let the game slip away in the third as the Senators scored twice in a span of 2:39. "I thought we played real well, especially the first two periods," said Nashvilles Mike Fisher. "We thought we were the better team, but then gave them a little life in the third and the crowd came alive for them and before you knew it, it was 3-3." Spezza tied the game with 67 seconds remaining in regulation. The newly acquired Ales Hemsky, who had three assists, found Spezza at the side of the net and the Senators captain banged it in. "We knew we had to make a push in the third and it showed a lot of character for us to get a point," said Spezza. "We kept coming and coming, but it sure would have been nice to pull that one out in overtime." The comeback started midway through the third, as Cowen was able to find the puck through traffic in front and push it past Rinne. Spezza picked up his second assist of the night as he found a surging Methot to make it a 3-2 game at the halfway mark. The Predators three unanswered second period goals appeared to make this game look all but decided. "We normally do a better job of locking these games down," said Predators head coach Barry Trotz. Anderson could hardly be blamed for any of the goals as he was the victim of two redirections and a giveaway. Andersons night came to an end at 4:10 of the third after he was hit in the head by teammate Milan Michalek. On the first goal Spaling tipped a Michael Del Zotto point shot at the eight-minute mark of the second. Less than two minutes later Colin Wilson won the faceoff in the Senators end and got the puck to Jones on the point. The blue liner then passed it to Mattias Ekholm, who took a shot that Smith re-directed in front. The Predators made it 3-0 on Nystroms unassisted goal. Methot went to clear the puck and it landed directly on Nystroms stick for the easy finish on Anderson. A scoreless first period was highlighted by the damage inflicted by Shea Webers powerful shot. First, Anderson dropped to the ice after taking a Weber shot in the shoulder and minutes later Cody Ceci took a shot to the head that left him with a lacerated right ear. He did not return to the game. "You never want to see anyone go down like that," said Weber. "Hopefully hes doing all right because thats nothing you ever want to see." Following the game Ceci tweeted, "Thanks for all your concerns just a cut and a little shaken up should be back at it soon enough." Denvers second-year linebacker blames excitement over his first NFL start for his premature celebration of a sure pick-6 that resulted in a touchback instead of a touchdown in the Broncos Week 1 rout of the Ravens. "It was a young mistake. I was just in the moment," Trevathan said. "I thought I was in the end zone. Next time Im going to hold the ball up high and give it to a fan or something." After getting burned on the same route earlier, Trevathan stepped in front of running back Ray Rice to pick off Joe Flaccos pass at the Baltimore 30 early in the fourth quarter. He raced down the Ravens sideline but discarded the ball just shy of the goal line. That decision left teammate Wesley Woodyard with an ankle injury, made Brandon Stokley the new Don Beebe and ultimately prevented the Broncos from breaking their franchise record of 50 points scored 50 years ago. On the other hand, if Trevathan doesnt pull a Leon Lett, maybe Peyton Manning takes the rest of the night off and doesnt get a chance to make history with his seventh touchdown throw later on in Denvers 49-27 win. Trevathans miscalculation was reminiscent of Letts gaffe in the Super Bowl in 1993 when Dallas defensive lineman was returning a fumble for a score in the Cowboys 52-17 win over Buffalo. Beebe chased down a hotdogging Lett and knocked the ball loose just before he crossed the goal line. This time, as Woodyard casually bent down in the end zone to pick up the souvenir for Trevathan, who was celebrating a few feet away, an alert Stokley dived for the football and knocked it out of the back of the end zone. As Woodyard was helped off the field with an ankle injury, Trevathan got a good chewing out on the sideline from defensive co-ordinator Jack Del Rio. "He said some stuff I knew he was going to say and he said some stuff I didnt know he was going to say," Trevathan recounted. "We get into it but hes a grreat coach.dddddddddddd. He played linebacker, so he knows what to do." Specifically, Del Rio told him to be smarter and finish the right way. Hold on to it all the way back to the sideline, or even spike it. Just dont fumble. "We practice holding the ball up high, finishing," Trevathan said. "I have to apply that to the field. First game, a lot of stuff was in my way. I played with a lot of emotion. I have to slow down." When Del Rio was done chewing him out, Trevathan got a good razzing from his teammates, too. "Im going to laugh with them and Im going to get on them, too, about something, but Im just going to laugh," Trevathan said. "It was on me, its all on me and Im going to grow from it." Coach John Fox trusts there will never be a sequel with Trevathan. "Hes a young player and theyre learning, plain and simple," Fox said. "I think its fair to say Id be shocked if he ever made that mistake again in his career." Trevathan is getting his chance to be a bigger part of Denvers defence because of All-Pro Von Millers suspension and Stewart Bradleys wrist injury. The Broncos shuffled their linebacker corps this summer when the NFL suspended Miller for six games for violating the leagues drug-abuse policy. Nate Irving replaced Miller on the strong side, and when Bradley needed surgery in mid-August, the Broncos moved Woodyard from weakside to the middle and inserted Trevathan, a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky in 2012, into the starting lineup. "Wesleys ability to move over there in many ways actually might help because I think Trevathans been pushing to be an every down player, so it allows him to get on the field," said John Lynch. "The ultimate goal is to get your best players on the field." To stay there, Trevathan has to make good on his promise. "I wasnt even thinking. I was just running," he said. "It was a dumb play in retrospect. Its not going to happen again." ' ' '
