The two Olympic medallists are the only team members who have earned slots at the 2012 Games so far. They took the last step over the weekend to qualify for the team at the national trials. Huynh, who now lives in Calgary, and Verbeek, from Thorold, Ont., earned quota spots for the Olympics by claiming silver medals at the 2011 world championships. They needed a good showing at the national trials to confirm their place on Canadas team. "Having the opportunity to represent Canada at the Olympic Games is pretty special," said Huynh, who captured Canadas first Olympic gold in womens wrestling in 2008 in Beijing. "I think looking forward its probably to my advantage that I know what its going to be like." Huynh also feels good after recovering from a neck injury that plagued her after the 2008 Beijing Games. The national trials form Canadas teams, which then move on to Olympic qualifying tournaments. Canadas freestyle squad qualified Saturday at the national trials, which took place at the University of Winnipeg. The Greco-Roman squad (male only) qualified Sunday. Canada has never won a medal in Greco-Roman wrestling and last year only qualified one wrestler for the Olympics, Ari Taub from Montreal. Canada had a wrestler in all four womens weight classes at the 2008 Olympics. Montreals Martine Dugrenier is returning for the 63-kilogram class but Ohenewa Akuffo of Brampton, Ont., lost her Olympic qualifying spot to Leah Callahan, who wrestles out of Caalgary. cheap jerseys from china free shipping. Verbeek, who won silver at the 2004 Olympics -- the first medal ever for Canadian women -- and bronze in Beijing, and Huynh have helped make Canada a force in womens wrestling. The men havent fared as well lately, last winning a medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. National coach David McKay says Haislan Garcia is among the few on the mens side who have a chance of changing that. Garcia, originally from Cuba but now living in Coquitlam, B.C., says he feels the freestyle team is strong. "I think most of the guys could qualify," he said. Only four made it for the 2008 Games. On the personal side, he said he is training hard to improve on the 16th place finish he managed at the Beijing Olympics. "I dont like to be left off the podium," said Garcia. He feels he has already made his presence felt on the international scene. He placed fifth at the 2010 world championships and was a silver medallist at the 2010 Commonweath Games. "Ive just got to go there and show them I can win too." The mens freestyle team includes Montreals David Tremblay (55 kg), John Pineda (60 kg) of Burnaby, B.C., Matt Gentry (74 kg) of Vancouver, Jeff Adamson (84 kg) of Grasswood, Sask., Torontos Khetag Pliev (96 kg) and Arjan Bhullar (120 kg), who also wrestles out of Burnaby. Pineda is the only wrestler who wasnt on the mens freestyle team selected for the 2008 Olympics. He defeated Ryley Walker of Eston, Sask., to earn his spot. Those who havent already earned the right to compete at the Olympics will get a chance at the Pan American qualifier in Florida in March. ' ' '
