Schneider missed her first shot of the extra end and wobbled in her delivery of the second, but said her knee was not an issue. "There was no pain or soreness," Schneider said. "I just didnt get my feet underneath me. I just didnt get a good throw off." Jones won a pair of games and Scott split hers Tuesday. The co-leaders were chased by a pack at 4-3 including Quebec, Saskatchewans Michelle Englot, New Brunswicks Rebecca Atkinson and Albertas Heather Nedohin. It was a big day for both host Alberta and Quebec as they stayed in the playoff hunt with two wins apiece. "Were calling it Turnaround Tuesday," Nedohin said. Hollands team was halfway through a gruelling schedule of four games in four draws. The Jones team from Winnipeg completed their four-in-four and won three games. Jones edged 8-7 in an extra end Tuesday afternoon. "The four-game stretch is always a long kind of grind, so were just happy to be done and were happy with the two wins today," Jones said. "It was a nice way to finish it off with a tight game." B.C. second Sasha Carter is four months pregnant and was still feeling the effects of a stomach ailment making the rounds at the tournament. After losing 7-4 to Alberta earlier, Scotts Kelowna team scored four points in the ninth end to finish off Newfoundland 11-7. Hollands alternate Jolene Campbell was pressed into service both Tuesday afternoon and the previous night when Schneiders knee buckled. The alternates job on a curling team is mostly unglamorous, fetching and carrying equipment for teammates and practising late at night when everyone else is back at the hotel. Alternates and coaches watch games from a raised table at the end of the ice. But like a backup goaltender in hockey, the "fifth" as they are called, must be ready to step cold from the fringe of the game into action when a regular in the lineup cant play. "You really have to be ready to play," Campbell said. "I have to make sure Im getting the right rest and eating the right things and preparing just like the girls are. "Sitting on those bar stools all day doesnt really prepare you to play. Mentally thats the hardest thing about being a fifth player. You have to be ready to go all the time. On the side, you have a lot of other duties and things you are trying to do to make sure the girls just get to focus on the ice." Schneiders situation is an example of how important it is when choosing an alternate for a national championship. Campbell skips her own team in Saskatchewan, but is also Hollands alternate at a third straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She served in the same capacity at last years world championship, in which Holland won the silver medal. Campbell, 30, delves into other positions in league play and joins Holland for a few games during the season to ensure a seamless transition when a situation arises like it has in Red Deer. "It was nothing we really planned for, but we definitely had the discussions before coming that if that ever happened, we felt comfortable with Jolene and Jolene can play every position," Holland said. "We had those discussions so everybody is comfortable knowing if youre not quite 100 per cent and youre not going to be 100 per cent on the ice, that Jolene can come out and perform."
