JOHNS, N.L. -- The St. Johns IceCaps finally got their power play going thanks to an undisciplined Portland team. Edward Pasquale made 28 saves and the IceCaps took advantage of eight straight Pirates penalties in a 5-1 win Tuesday night in American Hockey League action. The IceCaps (5-1-1) went 2-for-11 on the power play. St. Johns had only scored one power-play goal this season prior to the contest. Forward Riley Holzapfel, who scored one of the teams power-play goals, is hoping the teams special teams struggles are over. "It was obviously a huge relief," Holzapfel said. "Were getting chances, we just have to bear down and get them in the back of the net. Hopefully thats a monkey off our back, and now the rest of them will come." The Pirates (2-4-1) took eight straight penalties, including six in the second period alone. "Obviously special teams were a big part of tonights game," said IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge. "A lot of power plays on both sides, and our power play found a way to put the puck in the net." The IceCaps came out firing, putting nine shots on Pirates starter Curtis McElhinney in the first 10 minutes of the game. But the Pirates scored first midway through the first period when Kyle Chipchura scored a power-play goal on a ffeed from Tyler Eckford. Charles Johnson Jersey. Pasquale, getting his first start of the season for the IceCaps, made an impressive season debut. "I was a little nervous, I mean its the first game of the year, but I definitely want that goal back," said Pasquale. The first period featured eight penalties, four for each team. The IceCaps seized the game in the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. John Albert got it started with one-timed a slap shot from Garth Murray to tie the score and Holzapfel potted home a rebound on the power play to make it a 2-1 for the IceCaps at 6:33. Jason King also added a power-play goal six minutes later, diving to smack a puck into the net following a few awkward bounces. St. Johns outshot the Pirates 18-5 in the second period. The IceCaps continued to pressure in the third. Brett Festerling scored his first goal for St. Johns with a top-shelf wrist shot, and Travis Ramsey also scored his first to put the game away. Portland outshot St. Johns 15-9 in the third period, but could not solve Pasquale in the period. McCambridge was happy with the goalies performance.
